A new study by UCL found men who drank 80ml of alcohol (five pints or
eight shots) in one sitting had bigger waists than men who drank the
same throughout the week. Large amounts of drink stop your body burning
fat. Here's how this weight loss wonder works...
You take a swig of beer...Within seconds, it passes to your stomach.
Twenty per cent of the alcohol is absorbed in your stomach, the rest
enters through your intestines.
The alcohol travels through your blood to your liver, where it’s broken
down. Waste products acetaldehyde and acetate are created. These send
signals to your body to stop burning fat. At the same time, your body
starts making fat from another waste product of alcohol, acetyl -CoA.
Your body can effectively process only about 15 to 30ml of alcohol per
hour. So the more you drink, the longer your body is inhibited from
burning fat, and the more fat builds up from the excess acetyl-CoA. (A
330ml beer contains about 17ml of alcohol.)
The solution? Spread out your 21 units over alternate days. Not all days ending with a ‘y'.
