A THINKING SLIMMER HEALTH STORY

A glass of wine could help prevent arthritis

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm have found that drinking a few glasses of wine a week can help to ward of arthritis.

They questioned nearly 35,000 people between the ages of 39 and 84 and found that those who drank moderate amounts of alcohol were up to 52% less likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

Women who faired the best health-wise were those who drank three medium glasses of wine a week, or the equivalent in spirits or beer – not those who consumed too much alcohol.

The team behind the research say that the most likely reason for better health is because alcohol lowers the immune response, and the arthritis is caused by the immune system attacking the joints.

There is also evidence that this moderate amount of alcohol may help to prevent heart disease and inflammatory diseases.
